Recap

STEETON suffered their first defeat of the new campaign and with it an exit from this season’s Isuzu FA Vase.

The Chevrons, who have not won a game in the competition since their first ever tie away at Northallerton back in 2018, were made to pay for a performance which manager Roy Mason lambasted as ill-disciplined and disappointing.

And not only did they fall to an eight straight FA Vase loss at the hands of Park View but missed out a potential mouth-watering local derby away at Eccleshill in the next round.

The opening exchanges were frantic with both teams playing great football as they looked for the foothold.

Park View had the first chances of the afternoon but on both occasions were thwarted by Brad Emmerson in the Steeton goal.

At the other end, the visitors had two chances of their own.

Aidan Kirby first charged forward after taking hold of possession and seeing his shot creep narrowly wide of the post.

Moments later, Jack Lynn thought he had given the men from West Yorkshire the lead as his in-swinging corner hit the underneath of the crossbar and went down towards the goal, but was cleared from the line.

As the half entered its final ten minutes, their discipline and performance went awry in the midst of a storm at both ends of the pitch.

George Kelly was shown a yellow card for an awful challenge on the edge of his own box, which on another could have very easily been a red.

From the resulting free-kick, Jack Mallinson put his foot through the ball and sent it beneath the jumping wall and across the face of goal inside the far post beyond the outstretched arm of the diving Emmerson.

Now a goal down, the visitors began to immediately push for the equaliser before the half-time interval.

And when Jake Townsend’s cross was clearly handled inside the area, the refusal to award a penalty sparked outrage amongst those in green and white.

Townsend’s protests were deemed to have crossed the line and when play was stopped moments later to allow a Park View player to receive treatment, the Steeton skipper was sent to the sin bin for dissent.

The visitors, now a man down, nearly found themselves down the nine men almost immediately.

Jacob Smith syphoned down a man as the home side attempted to counter and the defender was shown a yellow card despite being the last man.

The official ruling whilst a cynical foul, it did not deny a goalscoring opportunity.

Fresh from a half-time dressing down, Steeton came out firing in the second half but could not break down a resolute Park View backline.

In fact, the hunt for an equaliser was thwarted by two goal line clearances within a minute of each other.

The first saw Calum Thornton’s certain goal bound strike headed from the line after the striker had caught the goalkeeper in no man’s land.

From the resulting corner, another goal line clearance from a man in yellow this time turned Kirby’s effort away from the goal.

But it would be the home side who would go on to double their lead and with it progress to the next round.

A free-flowing footballing move from right to left across the pitch left Steeton chasing shadows.

With the ball now onto the edge of the box, Emmerson got down low to save the cross-cum-shot from Charlie Loveday wide in the channel.

However, he could only turn the ball into the path of the onrushing Ben Gallagher to smash home with ease from close range.
