STEETON can this afternoon announce Nicky McNally has confirmed his retirement from semi-professional football with immediate effect.
The veteran forward, who represented both the Chevvies and a number of other clubs in the local area throughout his career, hangs up his boots on the back of three appearances this season for the club.
After missing the start of the season due to an injury that required an operation, Nicky came back into the fold following recovery in October featuring in our victories over Squires Gate and Euxton Villa as well as our defeat to Campion.
However, he has now made the decision to retire from on the pitch duty but will remain with the club behind the scenes as both a club sponsor with McNally EV and assisting with the running of the Steeton AFC Business Club.
Speaking of his decision, McNally said: “I have really enjoyed being a part of the dressing room both last season and for a short time this season.
“There are a number of personal reasons why I wanted to still test myself at this level and I have been persistent.
“But I have to be realistic with myself and coming back from injury has not been easy as I wanted, and I can not keep up with this level of football anymore.
“I just want to say as I sign out, do not take playing at this level for granted.
“Work hard whether you’re in the starting eleven, part of the matchday sixteen, or not in the squad looking to break in.
“You will enjoy a long career at this standard if you work hard.
“I will be still around the club and helping where I can behind the scenes, but it is time to call it a day.
“At least I will be saving myself, and the club, money on physio, chiropractors, and osteopath bills!”
