County Cup Woe
Steeton’s hopes of becoming only the third Keighley club to lift the prestigious West Riding County FA Challenge Cup in its 114 year history were dashed at Elland Road this evening.
Roy Mason’s West Riding County Amateur League side were caught cold, conceding three early goals from poorly defended set-pieces to Darryl Leach, Josh Milner and Chris Wood.
It all looked over when John Penn made it 4-0 from the penalty spot for the West Yorkshire League side after a handball but that served to spark the Chevrons into life.
Lee Reilly chipped home from the edge of the box after a long ball from Andy King picked him out and then Reilly made it 4-2 from the spot after being brought down.
But then Andy Holden was sent off for retaliation just before half-time after being hacked down.
A spectacular strike from Josh Milner made it 5-2 after 57 minutes and the game was over for Steeton 15 minutes later when Matt Kershaw was dismissed for dissent, reducing his side to just nine men.
Despite lacking in numbers, Steeton held their nerve and matched their opponents for the final 20 minutes with substitute Damien Whiteoak providing a steadying influence.
Manager Roy Mason was disappointed how things turned out but after the match was swift to praise the incredible support shown for his side.
“A big thank you for our amazing support tonight,” he said.
“Sorry we couldn’t bring the cup back home but it was one of those nights when nothing went right. We feel gutted.
“The support the club has had from everyone has been amazing. We will use today to spur us on to better things. My focus tomorrow switches towards next season.
